Holy Redeemer Parish Council Minutes
May 21, 2008
7:30 pm
1. Father George opened the meeting with a prayer.
2. President’s Comments
· The parish will be getting a seminarian, who will work with the youth group along with other parish duties.
· The search for a new principal is underway. Saint Hugh’s took about 60 days to complete their search.
3. Chair’s Comments – Rita Thompson
· I am honored to have served as your chair this year. Election of new officers will take place at the July meeting.
· Welcome and thank you, Mark Russo, a new member of the board.
4. Minutes for March 19, 2008 were approved as amended.
5. Updates from designated parish representatives:
a. Social Justice – Dave Fortuna
· The archdiocese is holding a meeting tonight about social justice projects in Prince George’s county.
b. Liturgy – Kathy Nieman
· See report, Attachment 1, below.
· There were 14 people at the 4:00 p.m. Pentecost evening prayer service. The music was beautiful.
c. School – Sean Ballantine
· The opening for a new school principal is listed on the website. The board is thinking about advertising in Baltimore and Arlington.
d. Youth and Christian Formation – Lynn Baker
· See report, Attachment 2, below.
e. Finance -- Father George (Mike Wilson was absent)
· Improvements to the sanctuary will have to wait.
· The deficit may be $22,000 by the end of the year.
f. Facilities Planning – Father George (Bob Pizzano was absent)
· Bob will approach the contractors whose earlier bids were not accepted to see if they will lower their price to complete the roofing. If a contract is under $25,000 we don’t need permission from the archdiocese.
· The possibility of parents earning hours for work such as painting was raised. Kathy Nieman will send a list of possible projects she has noted.
· Is there any way to brighten up the mezzanine?
6. Old Business
· New council members will officially take their seats at the July meeting. Mary Wassman has e-mailed parish organizations requesting the names of their representatives for the coming year.
· The original parish mission statement could not be located; the current one was written under a time constraint and is not satisfactory. Kathy Nieman and Sean Ballantine have offered to work on this. Sean will put a notice in the bulletin soliciting parishioners to serve on the committee and also be the contact person.
· The 100-Year Anniversary Committee will start meeting in the fall to plan activities. Lynn Baker, Brenda Cooley, and Sean Ballantine offered to serve on this committee; a notice will be placed in the bulletin asking other interested parishioners to volunteer. Mary Wassman will e-mail Rosemary Allender and Agnes Newman asking if they are willing to be on the committee.
· Brenda Cooley, whose term on the council ended with this meeting, thanked the council members for their service to the parish and noted how much she had enjoyed working with them this year.
7. New Business
· Election of new officers will take place at the July meeting.
· Mary Wassman raised a concern about the same advertisers being approached by various parish organizations doing fundraising. Will this impact the Bazaar? It was decided to see how things go through the end of the year and bring this question up again in January.
8. Comments from parishioners
· Carol Macknis encouraged people to get information about parish activities to her so she can keep the website updated.
· She also stated that the constitution should be reviewed to determine if any updating is needed and to make sure that the council is following through.
9. The next meeting will be Wednesday, July 16, 2008, at 7:30
10. Rita Thompson led the closing prayer.
Respectfully submitted,
Mollie Huitema
