Maria Balducci was appointed Director of Music at Holy Redeemer Church, College Park, MD, in August of 2009, shortly after moving to the area from Chicago. In Chicago, Maria served as keyboardist of the Civic Orchestra of Chicago and pianist with Chicago Opera Theater. Her M.M. is from Roosevelt University, under the tutelage of renowned pedagogue Dr. Ludmila Lazar; and her B.M. is from Oberlin Conservatory of Music. She studied conducting privately with Paul French, director of music at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church, Chicago, and director of the widely respected William Ferris Chorale, and she currently studies organ privately with Richard Fitzgerald, organist at St. Bernadette’s in Silver Spring, MD. She lives in Washington, D.C., with her husband Michael Voigt, a firefighter for Prince William County, VA, and their chocolate lab, Bo. |
| The Holy Redeemer traditional choir sings for the 10 a.m. Mass on the first, third, and fourth Sundays of the month. Rehearsals are Wednesday evenings in the church from 8–9:30 p.m. The choir season runs from Labor Day–Memorial Day. Music is mostly 4-part SATB selections, incorporating music from various genres, from Bach and Mozart to Proulx, Rutter, and Parker. | The Holy Redeemer contemporary ensemble is featured at the Saturday 5 p.m. Mass each week year-round. Rehearsals are every other Tuesday evening from 7-9 p.m. (every week during the Advent and Lenten seasons) in the church. Guitarists, instrumentalists, and singers are welcome to join. Music is mostly in the contemporary style, including 3-part SAB music. Please contact music director Maria Balducci for more information. |
| The Holy Redeemer children’s choir (grades 4-8) sings at the monthly children’s Mass, which is the second Sunday of each month at the 10 a.m. Mass. Rehearsals are on Mondays after the Holy Redeemer school day, from 2:50–4 p.m. The children’s choir also sings for the monthly school liturgies, and special occasions such as the Christmas Eve children’s liturgy, Confirmation, grandparents day, Catholic School Week’s open house, and graduation. The children sing all styles of music, from chant in Latin to contemporary songs. Extra rehearsals for other youth and high schoolers who are unable to make weekly rehearsals, as well as instrumentalists, are welcome for special occasion liturgies, particularly the Christmas Eve liturgy. | The Holy Redeemer schola features a small group of talented singers, who sing for feast days and holy days, usually at the Sunday 12 p.m. liturgies. Music written in SATB and a cappella styles are featured. Auditions are required to join the schola. Please contact music director Maria Balducci for more information. |
